Masculine or Metro……
“My masculinity isn’t hinged on whether or not I knit”.
~Robin Green and Mitchell Burgess, Northern Exposure, Hello, I Love You, 1994~
A recent posting to a website I am a member of generated a discussion on what has become known as “Metrosexuals” or “Emos”. The definition of these 2 Politically Correct terms has come to define the feminization of the male of the species. According to an article by Mark Simpson in a Salon.com article entitled “Meet The Metrosexual” (July 2003),”old-fashioned (re)productive, repressed, unmoisturized masculinity was being given the pink slip by consumer capitalism. The stoic, self-denying, modest straight male didn’t shop enough — his role was to earn money for his wife to spend — so he had to be replaced by a new kind of man, one less certain of his identity and much more interested in his image… A man, in other words, who is an advertiser’s walking wet dream.” Does this mean all metrosexuals are gay? Actually, according to Simpson, who is gay, went on to state “Commercially… it makes perfect sense to maintain that metrosexuals are all straight — after all, advertising is trying to persuade as many men as possible to relax their sphincter muscles, cooing in their ear that there’s nothing gay about being f***ed by corporate consumerism.
So is Metrosexuality nothing more than a marketing ploy to chase the all mighty dollar? Well first let me put forth MY definition of masculinity.
1. A man who not only demonstrates the physical qualities of ruggedness but who also possesses inner toughness.
2. A man who says what he means and means what he says. A man who recognizes the importance of honesty.
3. A man of noble principle.
4. A man without covetousness.
5. A man who cannot be bribed or bullied.
6. A man committed to manly virtues.
7. A man who is the head of his home and knows how to control and discipline his children. (Before I get more hate mail than my ISP can handle, I’m not advocating beating your children but you cannot be your child’s friend. You MUST be the parent)
8. A man who loves justice but also knows tenderness and mercy.
9. A man who fears God and shows reverence for the sacred.
10. A man who knows the difference between the rule of law and the lust for power.
There was a time in America when society as a whole expected men to be masculine. Boys were taught physical, emotional, and spiritual toughness. They played “rough” games. They were taught how to defend themselves and theirs. At the same time, they were taught rules of etiquette, polite manners, and proper speech. They knew the meaning of the word “gentleman.” Manhood had more to do with how well he behaved, not how well he cussed or how well he was “endowed”. That Hollywood is continuing to pollute our culture with its incessant promotion of movies which praise and promote the Metrosexual lifestyle is one more nail in the coffin of American decency and manhood. But Hollywood is not alone as the only culprit. America’s politicians, business leaders, and even church leaders are all contributing to the problem.
Colorado passes law for unisex private areas!
SAY WHAT!!! Yep according to the website “The Ownage” The lovely state of Colorado has passed a state wide law that states, I quote, “nobody can be restricted from a private place, including bathrooms and locker rooms, based upon their gender or their “appearance of gender”. Does anyone other than me see where this is going? So in other words if my wife wishes to use the public restroom or use the women’s locker room at a gym to take a shower any man will be able to go in to ‘use the facilities’, against all moral and social mores, and no one can stop them? If anyone says anything all they have to say is “I perceive myself to be a woman trapped in a man’s body” and hold on for the law suit. You can call me a prude if you wish but I will make sure that the proper respect is shown to my wife at all times as a man should do. Some people would accuse me of not “trusting my wife” to handle the situation and that is far, far from the truth. More equally it should be addressed as to why the government put my wife in that position in the first place. Common decency seems to be disappearing at a rate that staggers the mind and for the most part I feel we can lay most of the blame at the feet of feminism.
If you are a heterosexual male, or female for that matter, of any race, tear yourself away from the war on terrorism and let me inform you of at least 1 of the real problems. It has been shown time and time again that feminism has metamorphosed from demands for gender equality into gender warfare against masculinity. The feminists’ holy war against the so called “toxic man” is as ferocious in its way as the Muslim holy war against the West. The most virulent forms of feminism attacks male sexuality and has succeeded in criminalizing masculinity itself. Feminism criminalized masculinity by inventing attitudinal crimes and conflating them with behavioral crimes so now we may be convicted for what we think.
Just take a quick look at how many military careers were destroyed by the disproportionate response to the “tailhook “scandal” which has everything to do with feminist perception of masculine attitudes and nothing to do with concrete acts of sexual abuse, harassment or discrimination.
Does anyone here remember the female marine who complained of sexual harassment because she experienced the three-mile morning run as “demeaning to women”? If a male had made such a complaint, it would have been regarded as frivolous, and he would have been asked if he had chosen the right service. The female’s complaint, however, was taken seriously. The top brass stopped the exercise while the charge was investigated.
These events underline my point that feminists have defined masculine performance and attitudes, such as a protective role toward women and children, as sexist and anti-woman and have lumped expressions of masculinity together with actual acts of harassment and abuse.
Consider the case of Col. James Hallums who was removed in 1997 as chairman of the Dept of Behavioral Sciences at West Point. Hallums, a “soldier of the old school,” was brought to West Point because of concerns over the school’s deteriorating military and disciplinary standards. Hallums’ unabashed manliness, however, was out of step with a feminized military. Female faculty members charged him with sexual harassment and “creating an intimidating environment.” One of his offenses was that, after returning from exercise, he walked through the department in a sleeveless shirt and exercise shorts. His confidence in, and display of, his masculinity was considered by female faculty members to be an offensive act.
Consider, also, the case of Admiral Stanley Arthur, vice chief of Naval Operations, veteran of 500 combat missions in Vietnam, winner of eleven Distinguished Flying Crosses, and commanding officer of U.S. Air Forces in the Gulf War who was in line for appointment by then President Clinton as commander of U.S. forces in the Pacific. When a female lieutenant washed out of helicopter school, she blamed it on sexual harassment and enlisted Senator David Durenberger in her cause. The Navy refused to capitulate but agreed to have Admiral Arthur review the record. Unlike Durenberger, Arthur was unaware of, or unwilling to pander to, the new sexual politics. When documented performance inadequacies, on the female lieutenant, prevented Adm. Arthur from overturning the Navy’s decision to wash out the lieutenant, he became caught up in the “scandal.” Feminists saw his decision as proof that Arthur was guilty of keeping women barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen and out of combat. Durenberger put a hold on his appointment, and the Navy sacrificed its hero on the altar of political correctness. All Adm. Arthur did was his duty, but feminists had defined military duty as a masculine agenda. Thus, Arthur was guilty of “sexism.”
What makes it possible for extreme irrationality to run roughshod over fact, not only in academic settings but also in society’s most disciplined institution, the military? My answer is that the subjective and the emotive have been elevated over the objective and reason. What counts’ is not what men do but what women feel. Women have been taught to feel victimized by men to such an extent that all expressions of masculinity are offensive to feminists. Men who have caught on to this dynamic minimize their vulnerability to charges and destruction of career by becoming effete and showing that they are “in touch with their feelings” and “share your pain.”
Now that masculinity is criminalized, men who are not allied with, and protected by, feminists cannot succeed. Any doubts about this can be expelled by examining how one woman, Lt. Paula Coughlin, was able to destroy so many male naval careers with Tailhook. It is ironic that American males, demonized and second-class citizens in their own society are at work liberating Afghan women from Bin Laden and the Taliban. Perhaps the American male should re-conquer his home front before he shows his prowess abroad.
The EMO/Metrosexual movement is on and it’s growing every day. A recent Google search for just the word EMO turned up 477,000,000 separate articles all dealing with the sub-culture EMO. Metrosexual turned up 11,300,000 and these are just the English language one alone. Here is a little test I found on one of those sites
You might be a Metrosexual if;
1. You can’t walk past a Banana Republic store without making a purchase.
2. You own 20 pairs of shoes, half a dozen pairs of sunglasses, just as many watches and you carry a man-purse.
3. You see a stylist instead of a barber, because barbers don’t do hi-lights.
4. You can make her lamb shanks and risotto for dinner and Eggs Benedict for breakfast… all from scratch.
5. You only wear Calvin Klein boxer-briefs.
6. You shave more than just your face. You also exfoliate and moisturize.
7. You would never, ever own a pickup truck.
8. You can’t imagine a day without hair styling products.
9. You’d rather drink wine than beer… but you’ll find out what estate and vintage first.
10. Despite being flattered (even proud) that gay guys hit on you, you still find the thought of actually getting intimate with another man truly repulsive.
Really manlike right? Not to be outdone I found this EMO test;
1. I pretend that I like Dashboard Confessional just to impress my friends.
2. My acoustic guitar is my best friend.
3. I write songs and/or poetry often.
4. I hate my life.
5. I am secretly in love with an emo kid.
6. I listen to emo music.
7. I have an emo haircut.
8. I am often told that I am emo.
9. I wear really tight pants.
10. I smoke.
11. I brag about crying or cutting myself.
12. I am NOT emo.
13. I am attracted to dark corners.
14. I tell people that I am bisexual.
15. I often make fun of emo kids.
16. I think emo kids are hot.
17. I proudly label myself as emo.
18. I am afraid of being stereotyped as emo.
19. I cry alot.
20. I like to cut myself.
I know we live in a society of tolerance but can anyone out there prove to me this is healthy.

I love this comment and wish you’d explored it more:
“there’s nothing gay about being f***ed by corporate consumerism.”
I failed every one of your tests. Giving myself 1/2 points for the definition of masculinity number 9. You know I respect the sacred and rights of others but hold no fear of fictional characters.
Equal rights should be just that. EQUAL. Not better. You can’t fight for equality then demand a seperate set of standards for your gender. A helicopter test or 3 mile run is the same for everyone. You fail or don’t like it find a new vocation.
Drives me crazy when my wife demands equality and demands gentlemanly behavious that is contradictory. I use ever opportunity to point out that she would never do the same for me so it is NOT equal.
Sure everyone should have the same basic rights to freedom, democracy and safety. But if you don’t have the qualifications for the job then you don’t get hired just to fill a quota. You don’t get hired to eliminate a percieved glass ceiling. The best candidate gets the job.
Sooner or later crying wolf will get no response so enjoy the liberty while you can.
As for proof…. need I remind you of your first amendment?
This is actually a good thing. We need free speech and expression to allow diversity. We also need free speech to tell these people they are being stupid.
